A la fin de cette année, en accord avec le CA sortant de la SFDES, je cesserai de m’occuper des deux sites web de l’association, www.sfdes.fr et www.repertoire-seiziemistes.fr.

Sur la demande amicale  de Jean Vignes, j’avais d’abord mis en place ce premier site dès janvier 2007 avec l’idée de rendre davantage visibles les activités de l’association sur Internet tout en ouvrant nos actualités globalement à celles et ceux qui font vivre la recherche seiziémiste tant en France qu’à l’étranger; compte tenu des difficultés à mettre à jour les données personnelles des membres de l’association, j’avais ensuite proposé un nouveau répertoire électronique, en ligne depuis janvier 2009.

J’ai tenté tout au long de ces cinq dernières années, malgré mes maigres compétences informatiques, de répondre au mieux aux besoins de la société, de ses membres, de son CA, des utilisateurs des sites. Bien que tout à fait conscient des limites des services proposés, j’espère qu’ils auront su apporter, en l’état, satisfaction à la majorité d’entre vous.

Je remercie celles et ceux qui, d’une manière ou d’une autre, m’ont apporté leur confiance, en me donnant la responsabilité de la communication web de l’association, en me confirmant dans ces fonctions malgré le rejet de ma candidature au CA lors du vote de janvier 2009, en me chargeant de publier sur le web leurs diverses actualités, enfin en étant toujours plus nombreux à consulter nos sites.

Je souhaite toute la réussite possible à Gérald Péoux qui devrait prendre la responsabilité de ce site à partir de janvier. Isabelle Garnier-Mathez et moi mettons tout en oeuvre pour que vous trouviez, l’année prochaine, la suite de ce service à cette même adresse www.sfdes.fr.

J’ai bon espoir de continuer, avec le même plaisir, à collaborer avec vous dans d’autres projets.

Diversity and Deviance: Art, Commerce and Religion in 16th century Antwerp, 12/12-13/2011

In histories of Antwerp, the sixteenth century is known as the city’s “Golden Age.” During Antwerp’s short century, to which the Spanish retaking of the city in 1585 provides a definitive end, the city experienced a sweeping upheaval – economic, religious and artistic. Processes of economic rationalization transformed day-to-day life; systems of trade and finance became more complex, facilitating a more efficient movement of goods, currency, and people through the city in ever-greater numbers. Within half a century, the city became a kind of European “économie-monde” (Fernand Braudel). The newly expanded possibilities of trade opened up new markets to Antwerp artists, who supplied global demand by streamlining their own processes of production. However, there are diverging storylines in this account of cultural and economic standardization: the process of confessional pluralization, which brought with it practices of tolerance but also greater persecution of minorities, and the birth of artistic genres.
The goal of this workshop is to investigate the relationship between the aforementioned processes of standardization and pluralization in sixteenth-century Antwerp, foregrounding the city’s position as a crossroads – not just for the movement of goods but also ideas. At this moment of early capitalist development, the city offered its residents a “market of beliefs” as well as an art market. Just as the believer had his or her choice of religious affiliation, so the producers and consumers of pictorial art also had more options than ever before, with a set of new genres emphasizing the comic or low-brow dimension of everyday life. Workshop papers will explore the categories of difference and non-conformity in art, religion, and commerce, and how diversity was perceived by contemporaries. Which forms of economic, artistic and religious innovation and diversity were accepted, or even celebrated, and which were labeled as deviance or subversion?

The First Annual Postgraduate Renaissance Symposium

In Renaissance art historical scholarship, the category of the portrait has provided a key framework for thinking about and discussing representations of the individual, an emphasis that has been echoed in a range of recent exhibitions celebrating Renaissance ‘faces’.

The inaugural Renaissance postgraduate symposium invites new scholars to explore the limits of this framework. It aims to encourage students of the Renaissance, in its broadest definition, to consider the domestic, devotional and urban environments of portraits. Contributors are invited to consider how the experience of viewing, commissioning and living with portraits affects our understanding of their meaning and function, situating the images within their historical contexts rather than within the museum’s exhibition space. Likewise, we invite participants to challenge the terminology of portraiture and to consider objects and images which do not fit into the conventional category of the ‘portrait’ but which nevertheless ‘portray’ individuals.

Topics could include, but are not limited to:
- Self-fashioning
- Portraiture and problems of terminology
- Public and private spaces for portraits
- Portraiture and its relationship to literature, music & architecture
- Fashion, make-up and adornment
- Experience of the domestic space
- Mimesis
- The role of the patron
- New media: engravings, woodcuts, etchings
- The relationship between portrait and narrative
- Author portraits and book illustrations
- Funerary monuments
- Exhibiting Renaissance portraiture
- Collecting habits

The Renaissance Symposium offers the opportunity for research students at all levels from universities in the UK and abroad to present their research and receive feedback in a friendly and constructive environment.
We cannot offer travel subsidies for speakers, and therefore students from outside London are encouraged to apply to their institutions for funding to attend the symposium.

Among the initiatives for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Giorgio  Vasari, the Accademia Petrarca di Lettere Arti e Scienze di Arezzo organizes the congress “Riflettendo su Giorgio Vasari, artista e storico”, which will be held in Arezzo, Casa del Petrarca, via  dell’Orto n. 28,  on December 16, 2011.

The scientific curator of the congress is Floriana Conte (Fondazione Ermitage Italia, Ferrara), the coordinator is Giulio Firpo (University of Chieti-Pescara and President of the Accademia Petrarca).
